Why PTI protesters have much to learn from the past.

I addressed hundreds of rallies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, organised meetings, participated in and led marches, and was at the receiving end of police batons dozens of times.
But I never threw a stone or a punch.
In my youth, we struggled against General Ziaul Haq’s martial law. The educated and well-off youth were not part of our struggle.
Today, it is different: the educated youth have been mobilised on a large scale and the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) deserves the credit for this.
I am though concerned about how this political activism is manifesting. The teargas in the air and the containers on the roads repeat the story of violent protests. Pakistanis are, justifiably, expressing their discontent at the state of affairs.
But unlike the semi-literate, lower middle-class youth with whom I protested, I see the upper and middle-class youth active on the streets today. However, their activism doesn’t reflect the maturity of their privilege and education.
What I see are seemingly educated youth who are ignorant of how to be active in the political sphere.
I see PTI supporters throwing stones at the police and some even wrestling with law enforcement officers in Islamabad.
I see PTI-supporting lawyers in Lahore attacking cars and assaulting parents transporting children on motorbikes.
This is no way to be an enlightened political activist.
Our youth need mentoring. There is a way to be a jiyala or cheetah, and it does not involve throwing stones or punches.

PSP SOON HOLD A LARGE PUBLIC MEETING IN HYDERABAD: MUSTafa kamal.

HYDERABAD: Pak Sarzameen Party leader and former Mayor Karachi Mustafa Kamal Friday said his party would soon hold a large public meeting in Hyderabad.
He said this while addressing a large number of people gathered to receive them on their first visit to Hyderabad after release of PSP leader Anis Qaimkhani from the prison in Karachi.
He said the Anis Qaimkhani was arrested in a fake case. Kamal said they would take the message of their party for a peaceful, prosperous and strong Pakistan door to door.
The rally after passing through many parts of city and Latifabad talukas concluded at the PSP office.

How Social Enterprises and Impact Investors Can Move the Needle to Achieve the SDGs

Last month the UNDP and Impact Hub organized the first Social Good Summit in Geneva, bringing together impact investors, international organizations and entrepreneurs to discuss how to scale up and finance impact-driven ventures to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
There was a great appetite at the summit to exchange ideas. Investors were looking to meet with innovative ventures and discuss how to create a reliable pipeline of investable entrepreneurs. Bilateral and international agencies were eager to learn how to increase funding sources and leverage their resources to implement the SDGs. Not to mention the presence of five entrepreneurs, selected through the rigorous #Accelerate2030 programme, who hoped to identify partners and supporters to scale up their respective ventures.

SDGS ARE GOOD FOR BUSINESS, HOW DO WE PUT THAT IN MOTION?

Betting on social entrepreneurship to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs makes sense from an impact and a financial return perspective, but the sector requires both financial and non-financial support. To put it simply, entrepreneurs need to unlock three doors: finance, market and talent.
When asked about key impediments to growth, Verena Liedgens, CFO of Agruppa, sees the key challenge as professionalization. “Everything related to back office – accounting, HR and IT – is a barrier to scale,” she said. “Social entrepreneurs in Europe and the U.S. can at times access pro bono services. This is not the case in emerging markets where companies often don’t have the resources to buy them but need them to grow.”
A 2014 report from the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs shows the value of incubators and accelerators providing early- and growth-stage companies with leadership skills, operational support and access to technology, and facilitating peer mentoring. The need to strengthen that part of the picture was certainly one of the main conclusions of the summit discussion on scale, as the demand for support exceeds largely what is freely available.

Ex-Senator Faisal Raza Abidi taken into custody.

Ex-Senator Faisal Raza Abidi taken into custody

KARACHI: Law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) officials detained former Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Faisal Raza Abidi after an early morning raid on his Karachi residence today.
Abidi was taken into custody after police and Rangers personnel searched his house in the city's New Rizvia Society for about half an hour, sources said. LEAs arrived at the former Senator's residence in at least 10 vehicles, they said. The law enforcers blocked all passages and surrounded Abidi's residence during the swoop.
He has reportedly been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. However, none of the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) has revealed the arrest of former senator.
The reason behind the arrest has yet to be revealed, however, sources informed that the former senator would be quizzed pertaining to some high-profile cases.
The firebrand former PPP leader resigned from his Senate seat in 2014 after developing differences with his party.
Abidi, once among the most trusted lieutenants of former president Asif Zardari, was accused of violating party discipline and repeatedly issuing statements in favour of martial law.
Meanwhile, Rangers also took into custody two political workers during a raid in North Karachi, and three illegal Afghan citizens from Gabol Town locality of Karachi.

PM’s children given last chance to submit replies in court.

2ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has directed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s children – Maryam Nawaz, Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz – to submit their replies by Monday as it resumed hearing of the Panama Leaks case.
The prime minister’s lawyer Salman Aslam Butt submitted his written reply in the court today, stating that Sharif did not own any offshore companies and flats. The reply added that the prime minister’s name was not mentioned in the Panama Papers and he regularly submits his asset details in the Election Commission and tax returns to the Federal Board of Revenue.
A five-member larger bench of the apex court led by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali conducted hearing of the case.
The court was irked when the Sharif family lawyer said that replies had yet to be received from Hassan, Hussain, Maryam Nawaz.
Justice Asif Saeed Khosa said that if the replies are not submitted, the court would accept allegations against the prime minister’s children. “Can you give a written statement that Maryam Nawaz is not under guardianship of the prime minister?” he said.
The court adjourned the session till Monday, 9:00 AM and directed that the prime minister’s children submit their replies in the next hearing.
The court order available with media states that the apex court is giving the prime minister’s children the last chance to submit their replies. It also directed that all parties should submit their Terms of Reference (ToRs) today.
A single member commission, comprising a sitting judge of the apex court will be constituted to probe the Panama Leaks.
PTI submits its ToRs
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf submitted its ToRs in the Supreme Court. In its ToRs, the PTI raised the issue of Mayfair Flats.
“How did Maryam Nawaz become the sole proprietor of the Mayfair Apartments? The flats are owned by Nescol Ltd and Nelson Enterprise companies. The court should find out when these companies were created,” the ToRs question.
“When was the Mayfair flat no. 17 bought in 1993 and at what cost? How were funds transferred from Pakistan?” the ToRs ask.
“All four flats were bought between 1993 and 1996. In that case did the Prime Minister lie in the National Assembly about buying the flats for $17 million after selling Azizia Mill? In that case the Prime Minister is neither truthful nor trustworthy,” the ToRs add.
Sheikh Rasheed submits ToRs
Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed submitted his Terms of Reference (ToR) in the court where he said that details of the prime minister’s assets and source of income from 1985 till 2016 should be investigated. “How did the prime minister manage to transfer his assets abroad?” the ToRs ask.
The ToRs also demand to know the details of tax returns, foreign investment and income.
PM is trying to escape accountability, Imran claims
Speaking to journalists outside the court after the hearing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan said that the prime minister was asking for more time from the court for no reason.
“The prime minister did not submit reply for his children. The nation is watching. Seven months have gone by and when the Panama Case is being heard he is not cooperating,” he said.
He alleged that the prime minister through the attorney general had challenged the SC powers to hear a case against him. “Why should the attorney general protect the interests of a corrupt ruler?”
He said he was happy that the SC had taken up this case. “When the judgement comes people will know whether we were spreading chaos or not.”
Will respect the decision of the SC: Khawaja Asif
Speaking to journalists outside the court, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that the Prime Minister had submitted his reply in the court.
He added that court has said that the commission will give out its decision soon. “The SC has hinted towards a single-member commission.”
He said that ‘some groups’ were trying to spread chaos in the country and he was glad that the SC had acted against them. “We will abide by the SC decision,” he said.
PAT, PTI squabble breaks out
Eaelier outside the court a squabble broke out between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf information secretary Naeem-ul-Haque and Pakistan Awami Tehreek member Khurram Nawaz Gandapur.
“This man is using abusive words,” Naeem-ul-Haque said.
To this Sheikh Rasheed asked the two to stay quiet as everything was being caught on live camera. Later the PAT member Gandapur was removed from the rostrum.
Gandapur told media that Naeem-ul-Haque had pushed him and said, “Move, our king is coming,” referring to PTI chief Imran Khan.

US Election 2016: Hillary Clinton's English mining roots.

If Hillary Clinton is elected president when millions of Americans vote next week, a small corner of England will be claiming links to the most powerful woman in the world. BBC News went to the mining region where her grandfather's journey started more than 100 years ago.
"There's a girl in my class who looks identical to Hillary Clinton."
It was the early 1990s, and this innocuous comment by a teenager, about the wife of the new President of the United States, would usually have raised no more than a passing interest.
But the teenager in question was the son of local historian Jack Hair, a man intent on uncovering the history of the town of Stanley, in County Durham, north-east England.
Mr Hair's curiosity piqued, he decided to speak to the girl's father who confirmed there was indeed a family link to Mrs Clinton, setting the amateur historian off on a mission to establish the then-First Lady's roots.
PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has decided to register an FIR against the federal interior minister, commandant Frontier Constabulary (FC) and Punjab’s inspector general of police for torturing Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf workers during the party’s march on Islamabad.
Spokesperson for the provincial government, Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani, told Dawn that the chief minister had decided to register an FIR against Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Punjab IG Mushtaq Sukhera and Commandant FC Liaquat Ali Khan who were responsible for torturing the PTI workers.
Earlier on Oct 31, thousands of PTI workers, led by Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, clashed with police after they were tear-gassed following their attempts to break through the barricades, first at the Hazro area on the border of Punjab and KP and later at the Burhan Interchange on the Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway.
Mr Ghani said that they had ordered gassing and torture of unarmed PTI workers and used rubber bullets against them. He said that there was no law and order situation in the wake of PTI march on Islamabad and these people, including Mr Nisar, ordered torture of their workers and KP chief minister.
He questioned that under what law the orders for torturing the peaceful PTI workers was given. He said that the FIR would likely be registered in the police station in Punjab in whose jurisdiction the torture had taken place. However, he said that they were consulting with their lawyers in this regard.

China’s ‘monkey king’ picks Trump as next US president

China’s ‘monkey king’ picks Trump as next US president
SHANGHAI: A Chinese monkey described as the "monkey king" has tipped Donald Trump for the US presidency, a tourism park said, after the creature successfully predicted the winner of football´s European Championship final earlier this year.
Known as Geda -- which means knots or goose bumps -- the primate is the latest in a series of purportedly psychic animals that have popped up around the world since Paul the Octopus correctly predicted multiple 2010 World Cup matches.
The simian seer, wearing a yellow shirt emblazoned with his title, was given a chance to pick between life-sized cut-outs of Republican Trump and his Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.
After "deliberate thought" the mystic monkey chose Trump, Shiyanhu Ecological Tourism Park said Thursday in a statement on its website. Without even waiting, he congratulated the cardboard candidate with a kiss on the lips.
The five-year-old simian correctly predicted Portugal would win the 2016 European football championship in July, two days before Cristiano Ronaldo´s side prevailed 1-0, online news portal ifeng.com reported at the time.
Then, the monkey was presented with the national flags of Portugal and France with bananas on both. It finally walked towards the national flag of Portugal and ate a banana there, the report said.
Geda´s antics seem to have been inspired by the oracular octopus Paul.
In 2010, Paul the Octopus became the world´s most famous mollusc when he foretold the results of every match played by Germany at the World Cup in South Africa, as well as Spain´s victory against the Netherlands in the final.
